Treasure Town - A fun way to engage in the idea of circular economy
Treasure Town - A Circular Economy Fun Event
All our members have been organising away in the background and it's hard to believe our event is almost upon us! The idea of Treasure Town is to celebrate all the wonderful things around us and to demonstrate the idea of the circular economy in a fun and engaging way.
So much of our consumerist society drives us to constantly purchasing new things. And of course those new things, more often than not, will eventually end up in landfill. Apart from the emissions problem with landfill sites, we have to think about all the resources that have gone into making that new item you have purchased. So, ideally, we all need to think of cutting down buying new items - the principle of 'refuse' is always the first of the Reduce, Reuse, Recyle model of waste reduction.
But perhaps that might make life seem a little dull at times - and Treasure Town is the ideal antidote to that! We're going to show all the ways that you can get 'new' things without going out to buy them. Swapping, sharing and repairing can give a new lease of life to our homes and wardrobes and best of all, it's accessible to everyone because you don't have to worry about budget.
On the day, we'll have a bicycle repair clinic with Fergal from the Cycle Clinic - this is a great chance to get your bike checked out for free and to have small repairs done. Throughout the day, the plant, clothes and toy swap tables will be there and of course, we have our talks and key activities.
You can see the event program below:
We've fun things for kids to do - Julie has come up with some fabulous ideas. We're delighted also to have Nuala Madigan from the Irish Peatland Conservation Council giving two talks on biodiversity. We'll also have information leaflets from the SEAI on home energy tips and Sustainable Energy Communities.
We're asking that people try to keep rubbish to a minimum - bring your reusable cup for coffee, which will be available at the Community Centre Coffee Hatch.
There will be a raffle for a compost hot bin which has been kindly donated by Dara from Kildare County Council and we would also like to sincerely thank the Council for funding our project and enabling us to bring the circular economy to Kilcullen Town.
